What is the Multiplication Tables Check?

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is an on-screen check taken by Year 4 pupils in England, usually in June. It looks at how quickly and accurately children recall their times tables up to 12 × 12. There are 25 questions, each with a 6-second window and a short pause in between, and the whole thing takes just a few minutes. The 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables come up more often because they are the trickiest. There is no pass mark: schools use the result to see which tables a pupil should practise next.

How this practice tool works

It follows the published format: 25 randomly chosen questions, 6 seconds to answer (you can allow more time while you build confidence), a 3-second pause between questions, and tables from 2 to 12 with extra weight on the harder ones. At the end you see your score, the facts you missed and the tables to revisit. Your best score is saved on your device only.

TablesTest is an independent practice site and is not affiliated with the Department for Education. The official check is run by schools.

How to prepare

Little and often works best: 10 to 15 minutes a day beats one long session. Start with the tables that came up as mistakes above, then use the printable charts and timed games to make the answers automatic.
